Reforms are imposed on the United Nations, which has made dubious investments

The agency’s current leader, Gareth Farmo of Norway, resigned Hours after the publication of the Times’s research on large-scale UNOPS investments. According to a UN official, he resigned at the request of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

UN agencies hire UNOPS to build roads, deliver supplies and perform other logistical tasks.

The financial crisis began when millions of dollars in surplus funds were raised, and IAEA officials lent $ 58 million to a group of companies, all linked to a British businessman who was met by members of the IAEA Investment Unit at a 2015 party.

An additional $ 3 million was given as a grant to a British businesswoman to support the protection of the oceans.

Dragan Micic, who represented UNOPS at the board meeting, said the agency hopes to “move towards greater transparency and rebuild the trust of board members and partners.”

Faremo’s deputy, Vitaly Vanshelboim, was on leave while the investigation was being completed by the UN Office of the Ombudsman. This report has now been completed and it is up to Mr. Guterres’s office to take further disciplinary action.

Mr Guterres’s spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, said: “The next steps include possible administrative sanctions or referral to the relevant judicial authorities in the event of a possible criminal offense.”
